Beam Stability Issues at Light Sources
نویسنده
چکیده
The level of photon beam stability required to meet measurement resolution goals varies from experiment to experiment, depending on experiment-specific photon phase space acceptance aperture and the sensitivity of measurement to electron beam motion within its 6-D phase space. Stability time scales range from hours to microseconds, depending on experiment sampling rate, data integration period and scan duration. Meeting these requirements at 3 generation storage ring light sources can imply micron and sub-microradian electron orbit stability and energy oscillation amplitudes in the part-per-million range, presenting a formidable challenge for accelerator designers. Beam stability criteria and the measures taken to meet them are reviewed.

Beam Stability in Synchrotron Light Sources*
Numerous third-generation light sources are now in a mature phase of operation, and several new sources are under construction. Submicron beam stability is being achieved routinely at many of these light sources in terms of both AC (rms 0.1 200 Hz) and DC (one week drift) motion. This level of stability is a necessary condition for the success of x-ray free-electron lasers such as the Linac Coh...

Synchrotron light sources based on Energy Recovery Linacs (ERLs) show promise to deliver X-ray beams with both brilliance and X-ray pulse duration far superior to the values that can be achieved with storage ring technology. Cornell University, in collaboration with Jefferson Laboratory, has proposed the construction of a prototype ERL. This 100MeV, 100mA CW superconducting electron accelerator...
متن کاملLandau Cavities in Third Generation Synchrotron Light Sources
The new 3 generation synchrotron light sources coming up are designed for a small transverse emittance. But the small beam size gives a low Touschek lifetime and calls for good beam stability. In some storage rings higher harmonic cavities are installed for bunch lengthening to overcome the lifetime limitations. The higher harmonic cavities also induce Landau damping that improves the beam stab...
متن کاملSuperconducting Rf Systems for Light Sources?
Advanced Synchrotron Light Sources must perform with extremely high beam stability to maintain their source brightness characteristics, and this must be achieved with large multi-bunch beam currents. With the provision of very low emittance and use of high harmonic output from insertion devices, control of beam current instability thresholds is essential. At present no operating Light Source us...
متن کاملAnalysis and control of the photon beam position at PLS-II
At third-generation light sources, the photon beam position stability is a critical issue for user experiments. In general, photon beam position monitors are developed to detect the real photon beam position, and the position is controlled by a feedback system in order to maintain the reference photon beam position. At Pohang Light Source II, a photon beam position stability of less than 1 µm r...
